response to love…

1 John 4:18-20- “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears is not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, ‘I love God’, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.”

With a true understanding of this intangible love, tangible love is inevitable.

All our love, all our doings, our change of heart…is a repsonse to His love….to Him loving us first. Until we know it…until we grasp how gracious He was to love us while we were still sinners, we will be relying on ourselves to love and act…which isn’t love at all.

To love isn’t a decision we make. It is a result of a changed  heart…from realising how unworthy, sinful, seperated from God we were, yet He loved us and chose us to be His children.

Response= repentence=humility=love.

We shouldn’t ‘try’ to love, ‘try’ to serve, ‘try’ to keep a good attitude. We should spend the time we do ‘trying’, in His word (eg Romans 1-3), realising that we were lost, dead, seperated from God by sin…and rescued, (Romans 4…)

We should dwell on it, meditate on it until it brings us to repentence.

The knowledge of His love is the deepest source of joy. We will never thirst again.

Mark 12:33- To love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all your burnnt offerings and sacrifices.

Colossians 2:2- My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Love isn’t just something we leave at ‘beginners level christianity’. Paul spent a lifetime sharing it and knowing it deeper. If we meditated on the words of scripture until it pierces our hearts like a double edged sword, we will find true treasure.

The problems we thought were our problems, we would realise aren’t.

The sin in our hearts is the problem. And His love is graciously the answer.

Abiding in scripture allows the Holy Spirit to shape us.

Knowing His love is the precursor to all the mysteries of God.

It is true…

“Your love brings me to my knees again…”

I was drowning. At the bottom of the ocean.

Pressure building in my lungs as the ever increasing need for a breath of air pierced through my body.

I could feel my heart pounding through my helpless body. I was dead.

Then came Your hand! As strong and as bold as the cross. With all victory and authority you pulled me out of the sin

that was my end. At the surface I gasped for air. Crying as I realised how close I was to death. My body fills with air and life again

as it ceases to tremble.

Above, on the surface, walking on the ground You place beneath my feet there are storms and strong winds. I fall over and am wounded. I hurt and struggle. But I stand and sing.

Why? Because I was drowning. Water about to fill my lungs and I couldn’t even see the surface. But You saved me. For this reason,

I am joyful and can face life boldly. Because I live and could not do so without You.

Also, on the ground, things can be great! It is warm and there are so many surprises and possibilities. But I am humble and joyful always dependent on You for the very air I breathe. Because I remember…..

I was drowning….

And You saved me.
